What is the Color of the Water of the Future?
Florence Neal invites the public to think about their environment and answer the question.
Answers to the question are made visible using special hand-carved woodblocks that are hand-printed using water-based pigments (mokuhanga) onto Japanese paper (washi). The artist is using the 17th century Japanese water-based printing technique (ukiyo-e), known today as mokuhanga. Participants receive a "Waters of the Future” button created by the artist.
You are invited to participate in the Waters of the Future!
Walla Walla is located on an aquifer system. The Walla Walla Basin has both surface water sources and groundwater from aquifers. This aquifer system is replenished by precipitation, snowmelt, and river infiltration, but concerns about overuse and declining groundwater levels have led to conservation efforts and water management strategies. Launched in 2019, this 30-year strategic plan aims to enhance streamflows and water supplies in the Walla Walla River Basin. It's a collaborative effort involving Washington and Oregon state agencies, the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, and local stakeholders. The plan focuses on balancing the water needs of communities, agriculture, and ecosystems.
The Water & Environmental Center is a center where public and tribal institutions and agencies, nonprofit organizations, and businesses use collaborative dialogue to educate, address issues, and build pathways for problem solving through partnerships.
